Go to any five star restaurant and you will find some kind of Italian dish on the menu. After ruling the world for more than 700 years, the Roman Empire imported all the world's culinary exploits and enhanced them further. Today, no restaurant will get a five star tag without a specialty in an Italian cuisine. Below are the top Italian dishes that you must try.

1. Lasagna

Lasagna is one of the most popular Italian dishes. It is a pasta and perhaps the oldest pasta dish in the world. It is thought to have originated from Emilia-Romagna and its traditional form is made with interleaving layers of pasta with layers of sauce, made with ragù, bechamel, and Parmigiano-Reggiano. In other regions, you will find lasagna made using ricotta or mozzarella cheese; tomato sauce; various meats such as ground beef, pork or chicken; miscellaneous vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, and mushrooms and then flavored with wine, garlic, onion, and oregano. Lasagna is oven cooked.

2. Risotto

This is a common rice dish among the Italian home dining tables. The rice is cooked in broth that may be meat, fish, or vegetable-based. Do not be surprised to find a Risotto dish flavored with butter, wine and onion.

3. Pizza

It would be unfortunate to talk about Italian dishes without mentioning the Pizza. This is by far the most recognized Italian dish. It has so many variations that it is hard to mention all of them. However, a basic Pizza will be made with wheat flour tomato, mozzarella, capperi, olive and anchovy as well as some meats which may be chicken, beef, pork or fish.

4. Spaghetti

Another world renowned pasta dish of Italian origin is Spaghetti. It is made with semolina or flour and water. Amazingly, hundreds of dishes have been invented from this concoction. A good example would be spaghetti alla Carbonara or garlic and oil to spaghetti with tomato sauce, meat and other sauces.

5. Braciole

Among the most popular meat dishes from Italy is Braciole. The dish consists of slices of meat that are pan-fried or grilled, often in their own juice or in a small amount of light olive oil. Note that Braciole is mainly eaten as a side dish, but it is very popular in the US.

Italy is the world's gastronomy capital and if you derive your kicks from fine dining; then you cannot have it better than in Italy. Italians are careful eaters and will only eat food that is very carefully prepared.
