In a city as large as Cape Town, there are hundreds of things to do. Below is a sample of some of them.

Top things to do in Cape Town

The year is 1652 and Jan Van Riebeek has sailed all the way from the Netherlands to the Cape of Good Hope. He becomes the first European to permanently settle in the supply outpost created by Dutch East India Company to replenish its ships that later went on to the East African Coast and India. The outpost quickly outgrows its earlier functions and becomes the capital of Cape Colony.

It is not until recently during the gold rush era that Johannesburg overtook Cape Town to become the largest city in South Africa. In a city as large as Cape Town, there are hundreds of things to do. Below is a sample of some of them.

Cable Ride to the Table Mountain

If you are picture buff, then this will be the most joyous ride you will ever have. You will have the spectacular views of the Cape Town Harbor, the sea, the city and the mountain vegetation. The cable ride can rival the ones taken on the Alps - yet it is not as expensive.

Shark Cage Diving

About a quarter of the world's population of Sharks lives in South African waters. If you are a dare devil or an adrenaline "drunky", you have to go Shark Cage Diving to get an up close view of the sea predator. If you get your kicks from danger, then Cape Town should be your regular playing ground.

Fine Dining

Cape Town is the melting pot of the world's Cultures. Peoples of various origins have made Cape Town their home. You will find the best of European cuisines, the best Indian gourmet food and traditional African dishes. I doubt there are any other city with as many foreigners in the world - apart from maybe, Los Angeles.

Tour the Historical Robben Island

One of the most recognized face in Africa is Nelson Mandela’s, the first black president of South Africa. He was jailed by the apartheid regime for 27 years in the Island. It is from this Island that the largest political party in Africa, the African National Congress (ANC) and the ruling party in South Africa gained its routes.

Cape Town is the best gateway to sample what the rest of Africa has to offer. If you have plans to travel to the hinterland Africa, make sure to first venture inroads into the city and sample what it has to offer. It can be an eye opening experience.
