This 1,700-acre natural reserve houses and protects numerous types of flora, but particularly the Torrey Pine, one of America's rarest pine trees.

What does that mean for you? Plenty of hiking and bird-watching opportunities. Grab your hiking boots and binoculars and spend some time exploring this evergreen oasis. And don't forget your swimsuit: Torrey Pines State Reserve is home to two of the city's favorite beaches, Black's Beach on the southern edge of the park and Torrey Pines State Beach in the center.

Torrey Pines State Reserve borders the Pacific Ocean just north of La Jolla. It opens at 8 a.m. and closes at sunset. General admission costs $10 and includes guided tours and nature walks offered by the park's visitor's center.
