San Cristóbal de La Laguna

The ensemble of San Cristobal de La Laguna  is one of the first towns that materialized the ‘town territory’ architectural concept. The unfortified town was built based on navigation, and the science of the time. The town features organized space in line with the new peaceful order that was inspired by year 1500 religious concepts. It was the first non-fortified Spanish Colonial town, whose influence would spread to the colonial towns in the Americas.

History

San Cristobal was established in 1497 by Alonso de Lugo. It was the last town to be established in the Canary Islands and takes its name from the marsh area known as the ‘La Laguna’. Unlike in any other cities, most of the initial settlers were soldiers. They were not assigned plots. Rather, the area was non-defined and anybody could build at any place.

The resultant chaos of haphazardly built area around the Church of La Concepcion was the due to lack of proper planning. In 1502, a regular town was developed by Captain General based on Leonardo da Vinci’s model Imola. Major streets were linked to the open spaces that further formed an elaborate grid of smaller streets. The Lower Town attracted ruling classes and monastic communities. The new town also included piped water supply that was installed at the expense of the Town Council in 1521. After sometime, the economic, religious and political activities were transferred to Santa Cruz, and this marked the start of the decline of San Cristobal.
