Seeking Out Zanzibar's Red Colobus Monkeys

Zanzibar is a small but beautifully scenic island in the East African country of Tanzania. Taking a trip to this amazing part of the world is sure to be an adventure no matter what you end up doing during your time there. But if you are looking to experience the majesty of rare wildlife, then the Red Colobus Monkeys are exactly what you are looking for.

The island of Zanzibar is one of the world's most exotic locations. The lush foliage and abundant wildlife are two of the primary elements that make this African region as unique as it is. One of the rarest and most beautiful species on the island is the Red Colobus Monkey which is one of the most popular attractions for tourists visiting this amazing part of the world.

Zanzibar is the only place on the planet where this endangered species can be found. No one knows for sure exactly how many of these monkeys actually are living on the island but some experts believe that there are no more than 3,000. As recently as fifty years ago there were tens of thousands of them. But things like deforestation and hunting have worked to cut their numbers down to a fraction of what they once were.

Despite the slaughter of these rare animals at the hands of mankind, they are surprisingly indifferent to tourists who visit the forests in which they live. Some of them get so close to the human visitors that they can actually reach out and touch them.

The monkeys themselves are somewhat colourful in appearance. They have a grey underbelly and a rust colored coat on their backs and heads. Whereas most species of monkey use their tail as an extra limb for swinging and climbing, this particular species is one of the only ones that uses its tail strictly for balance.

Visiting the endangered Red Colobus Monkey is not difficult. One of the most popular Zanzabar safari companies, Ziara Safaris, offers visitors the opportunity to trek through the jungle and see these wonderful creatures in their natural habitat. And as rare as they are, that is certainly the opportunity of a lifetime.
